Critical facilities as hospitals, government buildings, and some industrial installations require maintaining functionality during and after an earthquake. Their functionality not only depends on the structural integrity of the buildings but also on maintaining the integrity of their essential equipment. The current practice is to design the equipment mounted on structures for an acceleration value equal to the design maximum ground acceleration amplified by a factor given by the Seismic Design Codes. This method neglects the actual amplification of the motion through the building, which is a function of the dynamic characteristics of the building, and the actual frequency characteristics of the equipment. This paper presents the advantages of using direct generation methods for calculating in-structure response spectra (ISRS) for the design of equipment mounted on buildings.
