Reliable monitoring and prediction of the dynamic,deflection and aeroelastic behaviour of flexible structuressuch as long span bridges and tall towers due to severeenvironment factors, such as wind and earthquakeinduced vibrations as well as daily increasing traffic, areof great interest. Various techniques have been used inthe past and a satisfactory one is still the subject ofresearch. The civil engineering community is still waitingfor a large variety of accurate and instant data to validateand calibrate their analytical models. In this paper, theauthors present an integrated monitoring systemconsisting of Leica 10Hz CRS 1000 GPS receivers andprecise triaxial accelerometers to monitor the dynamicand deflection behaviour of large structures underdifferent external loading conditions. Two kinds ofsensors are physically fixed together on the structure anddata sets from the two sensors are synchronized. Forimproving the final positioning solution, some outlierdetection and multipath mitigation techniques are used inthe context of ambient circumstances. Using spectrumanalysis, main natural frequencies are extracted from thefield GPS and accelerometer measurements and used forfiltering higher frequency signal noise. A simple dataprocessing algorithm is presented in the paper as well. Atthe end of the paper, some preliminary conclusions arereached and further research is proposed.
