Five commercially available thioglycolate based depilatory lotions (i.e., Better Off~(~R) Marzena, Nair~(~R), Neet~(~R) and Sally Hansen~(~R)) were studied for the in vitro passive and iontophoretic permeability of insulin through porcine epidermis and biophysical changes in the stratum corneum (SC) lipids and proteins. Lipid extraction from the SC and decrease in α-helical conformations in the SC proteins are suggested for the significant (p<0.05) increase in passive and iontophoretic permeability of insulin from their respective control.
