In recent years, the volume of magnetic components have become dominant in power electronics circuits, and their losses cannot always be neglected. Therefore, design of magnetic components based on an accurate estimation of their losses is important to achieve high power density of power electronics circuits. However, conventional calculation method for the iron loss of a gapped inductor requires much measurement or complex electromagnetic simulation. This paper proposes a novel calculation method for iron loss of gapped inductors using the loss map method. An advantage of the proposed method is that the iron loss of gapped inductor can be calculated without electromagnetic simulation and with less measurement effort than conventional method. Experimental verification has been conducted with gapped inductors where MnZn ferrite core and iron dust core are used as the core material.
