Methods of Generating Gate Drive Bias Power Rails for IGBT Motor Drive Inverters

For its development of motor drive evaluation boards, Analog Devices needed to determine how best to generate bias power for isolated gate drivers driving the IGBTs. The methods used should be compatible with all motor control drive output waveforms, should be easy to implement and control, and should be energy-efficient and cost-competitive. We built a motor drive platform which used the following inputs: (AC mains voltage, 12V SELV for bias input power, and pwm signals from a DSP) to control a 0.5 horsepower 3-phase induction motor. Using this platform, we implemented and tested several techniques. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the results and conclusions of this work.
