Ozark National Scenic Riverways: Boat Noise Measurement Summary Report

The fundamental purpose of all national park units includes conserving park resources andproviding for the enjoyment of park resources such as the acoustic environment. NationalPark Service policy directs superintendents to monitor noise caused by mechanical devices.Park managers are directed to identify levels and sounds that may hinder visitorenjoyment and specifically, to monitor mechanical noise that may adversely affectopportunities to enjoy park soundscapes. Ozark National Scenic Riverways (OZAR) staffrequested technical assistance from the Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division (NSNSD),including measurement of pass-by noise from typical jet boats, canoes, and kayaks for usein efforts to understand how the recreational activities may affect the park's soundscape.This report provides tables, plots, data summaries, and references to applicable regulationsto help assist OZAR and NSNSD staff in understanding jet boat noise along its riverways.
