This paper presents optimisation techniques in the design and implementation of practical complex modem blocks such as Trellis Coded Modulation, Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM), Viterbi Decoding and adaptive channel equalisation on the TMS320C6201 DSP chip.The latest fixed-point DSP chip, TMS320C62xx, offers unprecedented processing speed up to 1600 MIPS (Millions of Instructions per second). The device is highly suited for real-time signal processing applications, offering an opportunity to implement highly complex algorithms within a single chip.Performance evaluations are provided on the level of efficiency attainable with the 'Optimising C Compiler' and 'Linear Assembly Optimiser'. The modem implemented is based partly on the ITU-T V.32 Recommendation and thus offers a view of the speed of the TMS320C62xx DSP and its suitability for modem applications.The suitability of the TMS320C62xx DSP for such processing intensive applications are investigated and the strengths and weaknesses of the 'C62xx DSP are discussed.
