This paper presents considerations for the determination of water levels or storm surgelevels, respectively, against which flood protection measures of german nuclear power plants have tobe designed. Primary subject is the determination of a design criteria with a probability of 10-4 /a or areturn period of 10.000 years, respectively. Hazardous flood events at sites located at coastal waters ortidal estuaries and at sites located at inland rivers are treated with different approaches.
