the use of aluminum/aluminum alloy powders has been limited in PM applications because such powders are coated with an oxide film which is required for passivatin.Normally passivation/oxidation of the surface occurs during the atomization process at rather high tempertatures.Aprocess has been developed developed to passivate aluminum/aluminum alloy powdes at low temperatures which reuslts in substantially reduced oxygen content and hence reduced thickness of the oxide layer.Studies have been performed to characterize powder passivated at low temperatures and to determine the benefit of the reduced oxide thickness in PM applications.
