In the past, Spectral Analysis has been used to assess the electrical interference between electric traction systems and Reed track circuits. However, although it is an effective technique for steady state or sustained interference, it is not applicable to transients. Nevertheless, attempts have been made to use Spectral Analysis by making a compromise between the sampling period and the frequency resolution, but this has led to doubt over the accuracy of the results.rnA computer model has been developed that operates in the time domain, and so it does not suffer from these shortcomings. This paper describes the model, which has been based on a Reed track circuit system in common use, and which is readily applicable to the transients commonly encountered in the operation of electric traction. It is suitable for assessing the effect of conducted transient interference from electric trains, and it has already been used for trains operating on both 25 kV AC and 750 V DC electric traction systems.
