Determination of optimum economic power commitment by wind farms equipped with energy storage system

Wind energy is an intermittent energy source; it is also a variable resource. In future electricity markets, wind farms may have to commit to deliver constant power for a given delivery period as any current conventional sources. Literatures have concentrated in the revision of current unit commitment formulation as a mean of integrating wind power in the grid network. Also, the use of energy storage system (ESS) has been suggested so as to reduce the variability of the wind output power. This paper proposes an optimization strategy to determine the optimum output power commitment by wind farms to the grid network so as to maximize the profit to the wind farm owner. Consideration is made to the wind farm output power, loss of life of ESS and market penalty costs. Microsoft Excel, MATLAB and Brute force method are used to solve this optimization problem.
