The most important structure of the Antwerp North-South railway link, part of the Belgian high speed train network, is definitely the twin-tube tunnel of 1225 m length and 8.00 m diameter which is presently bored under the old city centre. During the design phase, as well as during the execution of the works, constant care has been taken to limit subsidence in urban area. This requires the combination of classical underground construction technologies, such as galleries, sheeted trenches, ground injections, pipe jacked roof, jacked tubes... with boring process itself using a Tunnel Boring Machine (IBM).
