THE HUMAN ELEMENT IN CLASS RULES

The paper reports an analysis of one Classification Society's Rules and Regulations with regards to explicit and implicit Human Element requirements. The potential changes arising from increased marine interest in the Human Element are illustrated. The procedure used for a search for detailed, prescriptive requirements on this scale is explained, along with the development of an extended system of keywords for coding of these requirements. The sources of Human Element requirements in Class Rules are reviewed. Conclusions are drawn for a range of stakeholders (Owners, Shipyards, National Administrations, Class, etc.) and alternative options for future development are discussed.
