Realistic battlefield simulations in Military are required for training and analytic purposes. Such simulations are becoming increasingly complex due to technological advances. Modeling these 'intelligent' systems realistically is very difficult. A possible approach has been to incorporate rule-based systems into simulations. This approach attempted to develop a huge comprehensive set of decision and tactical rules. In practice, this approach has met with limited success because it is not able to model the complex, emergent behavior of the entities involved. The resulting models have also been found to be slow running, complex to understand and difficult to modify, and require great effort to migrate from one scenario to another. Recent developments in Distributed Artificial Intelligence suggest a possible alternative way forward. The essential idea is that a number of interacting entities, called "intelligent agents" behaving in accordance with a small number of simple rules, can generate extremely complex emergent collective behavior. The current research trend is to develop a representation of military combat and its command and control structure based on intelligent agents and their interactions. These interactions give rise to emergent collective behavior that resembles realistic military scenarios. This paper discusses the applicability of Intelligent Agent Technology to Battlefield Simulation systems.
