Ground movements caused during the construction of underground structures in an urbanrnenvironment need to be controlled to reduce the risk of damage to adjacent structures. In an urbanrnenvironment, structures are built in very close proximity and constructing underground facilitiesrnrequires very tight control of ground movement to prevent damage to existing structures which couldrnbe very costly. It is important that proper construction techniques coupled with proper analyticalrnmethods and design are adopted at an early stage of a project to mitigate such risks. Experiencerngained in past projects provides invaluable information and provides greater confidence whenrnembarking on new projects, while also allowing the development of better techniques for improving therndesign of excavation support structures in such critical areas. Through case studies better performingrnsupport structures can be designed and implemented with greater confidence. In this paper,rnperformances of earth retaining wall systems designed and constructed to limit the ground movementrnare discussed.
