An independent testing laboratory has received numerous orders for modifications to the ASTM D1384 "Corrosion in Glassware" standard test method. These requests alter the coupon metals, time, temperature, and coolant concentration of the coolant sample in an effort to better understand the behavior of the coolant on various metals employing glassware tests over extended periods of time. It is also possible to modify the corrosive challenges to the coolant by modifying the coolant mixture from the published ASTM method. This paper explores the possible value of using variations of ASTM D1384 including variations published in American and global OEM Standards and industry specifications such as Hyundai and JIS. It also explores the use of a coupon bundle that more closely approximates the metals in today's light-duty automotive systems. Some other changes include extended period and spaced interval options, different corrosive water formulas, and testing multiple antifreeze concentrations.
