In this paper, an assessment method for structure damage due to shield tunneling was proposed based on risk analysis. Firstly the relationship between ground surface settlement due to shield tunneling in soft soil and closer building structure was established. The general impact distribution curves of structure were obtained. Thus it is possible to use clear physical parameters of soil and structure to perform the risk analysis of the bearing risk bodies. Secondly the structure was classified into large stiffness and small stiffness building. The grade of damage and the corresponding impacts of building structure were denoted by the gradient of building and the width of crack. And therefore the function between ground settlement and building structure impact by tunneling was acquired. Finally, a case study in Shanghai Metro presented a good beginning application of risk analysis.
