Damage from adiabatic shear banding is an important, but not completely understood, phenomenon that tends to appear in strong materials when subjected to rapid plastic deformatioa. It may be helpful or harmful, depending on the application, but to be used or controlled, the phenomenon must be described by physical models and established in a fully quantitative way that is consistent with dynamic testing. At the same time modeling must keep in touch with microscopic observations, even though it is not practical to be fully faithful to all the detail available. This paper discusses the most frequently used model for adiabatic shear and its relationship to finite deformation plasticity. Then, through examples, it will be shown how scaling laws that describe major aspects of adiabatic shear have been obtained from simplified, but representative, mathematical problems. It is to be hoped that eventually, through a process akin to that described here, a fully developed mechanics of shear will emerge, just as has happened for fracture mechanics.
