Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and ForestrnDegradation (REDD) is an effort to create arnfinancial value for the carbon stored in forests,rnoffering incentives for developing countries tornreduce emissions from forested lands and invest inrnlow-carbon paths to sustainable development.rn“REDD+” goes beyond deforestation and forestrndegradation, and includes the role of conservation,rnsustainable management of forests and enhancementrnof forest carbon stocks. In the framework of gettingrncountries ready for REDD+, the UN-REDDrnProgramme assists developing countries to preparernand implement national REDD+ strategies. For thernmonitoring, reporting and verification (MRV), FAOrnsupports the countries to develop national forestrnmonitoring systems (NFMS) based on satellite datarnthat allow for credible MRV of REDD+ activitiesrnthrough time. The UN-REDD Programme through arnjoint effort of FAO and Brazil's National SpacernAgency, INPE, is supporting countries to developrncost- effective, robust and compatible nationalrnmonitoring and MRV systems, providing tools,rnmethodologies, training and knowledge sharing thatrnhelp countries to strengthen their technical andrninstitutional capacity for effective MRV systems.rnThe Brazilian forest monitoring system,rnTerraAmazon, which is used as a multi-user basis,rnallows countries to adapt it to country needs. Withrnthe technical assistance of FAO, INPE and otherrnstakeholders, the countries will set up anrnautonomous operational satellite forest monitoringrnsystems. A beta version and the methodologies ofrnthe system for DRC and PNG are launched inrnDurban (SA) during COP 17, while Paraguay,rnZambia and Viet Nam are in development in 2012.
