Fatigue test on damaged reinforced concrete specimens strengthened by carbon cloth

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on fatigue behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened by carbon cloth, under 3 points bending test. The carbon sheets were bonded on the lower face of the beam and on the two lateral faces at two ends of the beam, using epoxy resin adhesive. The fatigue behaviour includes two aspects: one is the fatigue behaviour of composite material: carbon fibre plastic sheets and resin; another is the fatigue behaviour of specimens. A RC beam (20xl5x70cm), which was initially crack-damaged by pre-loading until the summation of two cracks reached 0,7mm, was subsequently strengthened by bonding carbon cloth with epoxy resin. The behaviour of bridging cracks with carbon fibre plastic sheets, and the behaviour of the redistribution of stresses between the bars and the carbon sheets under fatigue loads, will also be discussed in this paper.
