Surface status (freeze/thaw) can be derived using microwavesensors. Two data products (C-Band, based onMetop ASCAT and ENVISAR ASAR GM) were comparedin a spatial and temporal sense. The datasets havebeen separately published as an outcome of the DUE Permafrostproject. The comparison reveals an importanceof good temporal resolution of both data sets. The resultsshow differences between the data sets especiallyin regions of complex topography as well as during thetransitional periods with different intensity during springand autumn. The results suggest an added value of theintegration of SAR and scatterometer data with a specialfocus on mountainous areas, lake rich regions and transitionalperiods with a separate view on thaw and freezeback.
