Astaloy 85Mo Hoeganaes grade powder was used to prepare mixtures with different carbon contents both with and without lwt.-% manganese additions. The carbon was added both as a graphite powder and in the form of a solid C_7H_7 hydrocarbon powder. Compressibility of the powder mixtures was investigated. Green compacts were pressed at 600 MPa and sintered isothermally at 1200℃ in a dilatometer under a flowing high purity nitrogen atmosphere. The same conditions were chosen for the tensile strength compacts preparation. Carbon loss occurring during sintering was carefully monitored. Microstructures of sintered compacts were analysed and showed in some cases acceptable microstructural constituents such as fine and coarse pearlite. The advantages of using solid C_7H_7 as a carbon carrier in powder metallurgy processing of steels are indicated.
