THE SPOT 5 EQUIPMENT BAY: DEVELOPMENT, DESIGN, STRESS, MANUFACTURING AND QUALIFICATION TESTS

After a short description of the SPOT 5 satellite and its equipment platform, the most severe specification constraints will be detailed and consequently, the development plan will be presented. During the initial development phase T4, the tool concept and all the manufacturing steps were validated on sub-components, allowing the final design and stress phase T5a to proceed, leading on to the fabrication phase T5b. A short description of the design and the finite element model followed by the assembly of the two sandwich panels and the struts shall be presented. In order to qualify the manufacturing and the FE model, ten static mechanical tests have been carried out on the unique flight model. Results and comparison with the FE predictions will be shown. Following the qualification tests, a final dimensional inspection of the SPOT 5 equipment platform was performed, confirming the absence of any significant deformation compared to the initial measurements.
