Geotechnical issues of metro construction in a historic built-up area (Experience gained during the preparations and the construction of the Prague metro in 1966-1985)

Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is one of the oldest and most preserved historic cities in Central Europe. The construction of tunnels for subway under the city was thus a great technical problem. A range of special tunnel technologies had to be developed. On the other hand excavation of the tunnels brought a large number of archeological and historical information.
