Monitoring cell-substrate interactions on nano- and microstructured surfaces is an emerging and important field in biomaterials research. Based on a modifiable three-dimensional (3D) surface structure, crucial for the functional cultivation of primary cells and the optimization of implant interfaces !'2'3, these materials are able to improve cell adhesion and enhance cell proliferation. However, a large-scale production of biologically relevant nano- and microstructured surfaces has not been possible due to the lack of adequate manufacturing technologies. Here we developed a method for the high volume manufacture of nano- and microstructured surfaces. We further tested systematically the interaction between these novel structured substrates and different types of primary cells.
