To assess the potential distraction of In-Vehicle Information Systems (IVIS), simple, low cost evaluation methods are required that can be used early in the design process. The occlusion technique can be used to predict the likely visual demand of an IVIS user-interface. However, occlusion is normally assessed through performance-focused user trials, requiring a sample of drivers using a robust prototype, and consequently has limitations as a cost-effective early design method. In the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) field, the Keystroke Level Model (KLM) has long been viewed as a reliable and valid means of modelling human performance and making task time predictions, therefore not requiring empirical trials or a working prototype. This paper provides an overview of an extended KLM which aims to predict measures based on the occlusion protocol. Validation studies have demonstrated that the modified KLM would have led to the same design decisions as the occlusion technique. Consequently, it is concluded that the extended KLM shows considerable potential as a means of predicting the visual demand of an IVIS user-interface.
