Field applications of a portable luminoscope for hazardous screening

Abstract: The Synchronous Scanning Luminoscope (SSL) is a field-portable, synchronous luminescence spectrofluorometerthat was developed for on-site analysis of contaminatedsoil and ground water. The SSL is capable ofquantitative analysis of polyaromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), creosotes, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)in complex mixtures. Synchronous fluorescence canreduce the complexity of the fluorescence spectra andallow rapid field assessments. Laboratory data ofgasoline standards, as well as field results from threedifferent hazardous waste sites are discussed. The SSLcan easily detect different types of contaminants athazardous waste sites with a high correlation tolaboratory data as illustrated by these studies. !0
