Pollution, risk assessment and rehabilitation at the Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park, Greece

National Technical University of Athens is in the process of establishing the Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park in an area formerly occupied a lead smelter plant. The intensive mining and smelting activities in the wider area have resulted in the production of millions of tones of mining wastes and tailings that are characterised as toxic and hazardous. Mobilisation and transportation of heavy metals from these sources resulted in widespread contamination of the ecosystem. In the present paper the main sources of pollution that are currently dircetly or indirectly affecting the Park were identified and characterised. A risk analysis on a source-pathway-target hasis was undertaken in order to assess the level of risk posed by each source. A rehabilitation strategy was developed for the Park, aiming at (a) deactivating the pollution sources and (b) rehabilitating the contaminated soils with immobilisation or leaching techniques.
