Preserving Our Nation's Transportation Heritage (Restoring the Blaine Hill Stone-Arch Bridge)

Although simple in form and function, masonry arch structures offer many challenges for engineers when evaluating rehabilitation options. This presentation will focus on the cause of the deterioration, on the repair and on the restoration of the Blaine Hill Bridge (a 345-foot, three span, stone arch structure built in 1828 with curved, S-shaped approaches). The presentation will include slides of the existing conditions as well as the reconstruction/restoration measures in progress.
