Reusability during product development offers many advantages including reducted lead-time, better quality products and reduced costs. Reusability is critical in collaborative environments with a variety of legacy and networked facilities. This paper proposes a generic reuse model for a collaborative product development environment and applies it to a hybrid collaborative architecture. This model evaluates reusability at three levels: (a) data-level, (b) function-level and (c) goal level. An analysis of the reusability of components in the product development architecture is based on our experiments on design and manufacture of a stepped shaft. results indicate that the ledad time can be reduced by as much as 60
