Venturi Injection for Pulp and Paper Mills

Venturi aeration systems are being installed at pulp and paper mills for a variety of reasons. One common application is to combat anaerobic conditions in a mill's process water system. By aerating/mixing Whitewater chests and other storage tanks inside a mill, problematic anaerobic byproducts can be avoided-specifically, Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) which can be retained in the final product and surface later as a rotten odor. Other byproducts, such as hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen gas, can present a grave explosion risk if they are allowed to accumulate in a system. After installing a venturi aeration system at one mill, VFA compounds were reduced from l,600mg/l (Acetic), 600mg/l (Propionic), and 400mg/l (Butyric) down to 590mg/l, 30mg/l, and 15mg/l respectively. At mills, Venturis are also being utilized in wastewater treatment processes in a variety of capacities ranging from in-basin aeration for BOD reduction to in-line post treatment oxygenation, and in some cases, concentrated oxygen injection. Regardless of the application, Venturis provide a low maintenance solution to help mill personnel produce a higher quality product, ensure a safe working environment, and reduce operational costs associated with wastewater treatment.
