In 1997 the Command, Control,rnCommunications, Computers, Intelligence,rnSurveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) ArchitecturernFramework Version 2.0 was released as a guide for thernU.S. Department of Defense (DoD) in the developmentrnof system architectures. This Framework wasrndeveloped under the auspices of the C4ISR WorkingrnGroup consisting of representatives from the Joint Staff,rnthe military services, the Office of the Secretary ofrnDefense, and other Defense agencies. The mainrnmotivation for the C4ISR Framework has been tornensure that architectures are interrelatable as well asrncomparable and integratable across Joint and multinationalrnorganizational boundaries. DoD, supported byrnrecent government legislation, will pursue therndevelopment of more interoperable, integrated systemsrnto meet the challenges posed now and in the future.rnDeveloped to focus on information technology, thernC4ISR Framework is finding broad application in thernDoD community. The C4ISR Framework serves as arnconsistent guideline on how architectures should berndescribed by calling out a number of views servingrnoperational, system, and technical interests. The needrnfor consistency and guidance is clear. What is not clearrnhowever, is how this guidance will influencernengineering activities being conducted on DoDrnprograms. Application of the C4ISR Framework isrnvery much in the pioneering stage. Experience isrnneeded to set examples and teach lessons as withrnanything new. This paper offers some experience byrndeveloping an operational architecture view in anrnapplication to Air Defense.
