There are a significant number of new high density mixed use developments planned in the South Bank area of London over the next 5 years. Such growth in building and energy density presents an opportunity to develop an integrated area wide approach to energy supply incorporating low carbon energy generation technologies with district heating and cooling networks. London South Bank University (LSBU) carried out a feasibility study to install Combined Heat and Power (CHP) across the South Bank area of London. Simple building data was collected on the major buildings in and near to the South Bank area that could play a part in determining the success of CHP. A master planning software tool was used to form four main clusters of buildings to allow an analysis of the overall energy demand patterns for each cluster. A rating system was used to identify the key existing buildings in each cluster based on heating demand, electricity demand and distance from CHP plant. A CHP model was then used to assess the economic viability and CO_2 emissions of each cluster CHP plant which shows that decentralised CHP across the South Bank area appears to be worth further detailed investigation. Based on the assumptions about future energy prices and capital costs, some clusters/scenarios appear to be highly economic with internal rates of returns in the range 15-30%.
