SEA/Renue is proposing to build pilot biogas plant in inner city London, which will process 2,500 tonnes/year of organic kitchen waste from households using an anaerobic digester. This project explores the viability of building such plants in the UK within urban environments and help to divert biodegradable waste from landfill sites. A production rate of 45m{sup}3/hr of biogas is anticipated, with an estimated yearly production of 600-650 MWh of electricity and 900-1,000 MWh of heat. The electricity generated is eligible for Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs). The plant will charge gate fees (GF) to the local authority for the reception of organic waste. ROC values are driven by the amount of compliance with the Renewables Obligation (RO) and GFs by the EU Landfill Directive. Two different CHP technologies were modelled and the internal combustion (IC) engine is preferred over a microturbine, in economic and technical terms. However microturbines are entering this market extremely rapidly. Different scenarios for future values of GF and ROCs were modelled. The results indicate that GF have a larger impact over the overall economics of the biogas project, and will become the main driver for building this type of plant in the UK.
