I have been teaching machine design in Osaka Sangyo University (at its faculty of engineering's department of traffic machinery engineering). Machine design seems to be among the university's difficult required subjects because it is a comprehensive subject that covers even the method of mathematical-equation expansion. To allow my students to feel machine design to be as easy as possible, therefore, I have been employing a large number of visual representations in my lectures. Visual representations are advantageous in that they are understandable at a glance. As an old proverb says, seeing is believing.' visual representations do have the effect. If put into words, the content of any visual representation would require a fairly large number of words. Generally, visual representations make it easy to understand even difficult topics. Today's university students were born with TV. In principle, TV programs visually- convey everything. Using both sounds and a series of visual representations on the screen makes it easy to understand and provides a plenty of information. It is my motto to use a method of teaching that allows my students to understand more easily. When I use visual representations in my lectures, my students simultaneously hear my voice and see the visual representations. Information is thus conveyed through their audio and visual senses so that my students can understand with ease. I hand my students printouts showing visual representations, made up of both bad and good examples regarding important items of design. I usually explain the bad examples before moving to the good ones, which I believe is easier for them to understand. When I asked my students to evaluate my method using visual representations on a questionnaire basis, they responded favorably because they say it is an easy-to-understand way.
