We have presented a new aiming point choosing algorithm for IR imaging air-to-air missiles. First, we get the target's plume segmented by extending the threshold algorithm based on histogram Iteration to a dual threshold algorithm. Spare pixel vectorization used here is able to find the plume axis, and then get the airframe's medial axis. Finally, according to the experiential proportion between the head and airframe, we can catch the head, one of the target's vitals. Tests show that the algorithm presented here is able to find the accurate position of the target's head and the thresholds for two binarizations needs no manual work, and the rate of aiming point choosing and tracking is fast.
