The paper analyses principles of several known methods for dimensioning spur and helical j gears. In the domain literature different dimensioning variants starting from different base points are presented. The paper is focusing on the comparative analysis of the methods of Niemann-Winter, Dudley, Henriot AGMA 901 and Radulescu: The analysis is very relevant, it permitting a comparing of these dimensioning variants from different points of view: entry data conditions,, criteria of the minimum volume of gears,consideration of the gear toothing failure ways, comparative results for the main entry data. Finally basic conclusions are relieved.
