When a catamaran racing yacht is operated by a wind-driven thrust, twin rudders are frequentlyrnoperated because of irregular wind forces. To cope with this situation, the maneuveringrnperformance has to be secured with a prompt control of the rudders. The purpose of this study isrnto measure the hydrodynamic forces applied to real rudders via experiments and to estimaternhydrodynamic forces applied to real rudders for 30 ft class CFRP catamaran racing yachts. Tornmeasure the hydrodynamic forces, experiments were carried out with the model ships in therncirculating water channel. The hydrodynamic forces of real rudders were calculated using thernITTC (International Towing Tank Conference) 1978 prediction method. Finally, the optimizedrndesign of real rudders was obtained by comparing the estimated hydrodynamic forces of variousrnrudder types with different aspect ratios.
