EXPERIMENTAL STUDY FOR DESIGN OF 30 FEET CFRP CATAMARAN RACING YACHT RUDDER

When a catamaran racing yacht is operated by a wind-driven thrust, twin rudders are frequently operated because of irregular wind forces. To cope with this situation, the maneuvering performance has to be secured with a prompt control of the rudders. The purpose of this study is to measure the hydrodynamic forces applied to real rudders via experiments and to estimate hydrodynamic forces applied to real rudders for 30 ft class CFRP catamaran racing yachts. To measure the hydrodynamic forces, experiments were carried out with the model ships in the circulating water channel. The hydrodynamic forces of real rudders were calculated using the ITTC (International Towing Tank Conference) 1978 prediction method. Finally, the optimized design of real rudders was obtained by comparing the estimated hydrodynamic forces of various rudder types with different aspect ratios.
