The paper points to the fact that the keys to new technologies for control of corrosion in the future are often conclusions drawn from case studies of the past technologies. The objective of this paper is to witness and document the development and testing (in the past) of two pack coatings based on thermosetting polymer components. Around 1960 and the following years started the two pack epoxy based coatings to be the preferred coatings for corrosion protection within industrial plants, tank storage and transportation. In the laboratories these first coatings of its kind showed resistance to water, oils and a lot of aggressive chemicals superior to protective coating materials known so far. Very soon a lot of disappointing practical results were reported. Extensive testing started simulating the processes and environments from where the disappointing results had been reported. This paper documents results from testing and study of the early two pack coatings, which at that time were seen as 'outstanding', and should be seen as one example of how the key was found to today's heavy duty two pack coatings. Coating materials which are now able to protect millions of square metres against corrosion during decades.
