Corrosion Control Within Timber Drying Kilns A Case Study

The New Zealand industry has over the years invested heavily in timber drying kilns. Corrosion protection of internal structural and lining materials is deserving of high priority. A case study is described involving a condition survey of two kilns, to determine the causes of repeated coating failure over structural steel elements and erosion of unprotected concrete. Based on the survey findings alternative protective coatings systems were selected for a refurbishment contract. A subsequent survey carried out representing two and three years exposure respectively in each of two kilns, showed that a significant gain in service life between maintenance cycles was obtained.
