Methods of monitoring Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) are reviewed and based on sensitivity and response, photoionization (PI) and flame ionization (FI) are noted as the most popular techniques for carbon bed monitoring. After a brief history of photoionization is described, the theory of PI and Fl are explained in detail. The application of continuous monitoring instrumentation to soil vapor extraction (SVE) is described as one of the few innovative technologies that has gained wide use for cleaning up contaminated sites. Soil gas monitoring for VOC's can be applied using portable analyzers and potential interferences such as moisture, carbon dioxide, methane and oxygen are described in detail.
