Multifunctional nanocomposite coatings (Planomers~R) have been developed based on hybrid organic-inorganic polymer coatings combined with anisotropic synthetic or natural modified clay particles. Exfoliation of these clay particles into single (separately) dispersed clay platelets has been achieved by a surface modification of the platelets with multifunctional organic molecules. Organic molecules with ionic groups are attached to the clay platelets via ion exchange reaction causing a mutual repulsion of the clay platelets and thereby a homogeneous dispersion of these platelets into the coating matrix. Introduction of these separated clay platelets in e.g. coatings results in increased barrier properties and other interesting properties like anti-fouling activity. Enhanced and optimized processing steps increase the effect of the clay platelets significantly.
