The effects of the various oeprating conditions were investigated on the production of #beta#-crotene in the calutivation of carrot cells using an external loop airlift bubble column suitable to a larger scale production. The optimum of each operating variable was determined taking the content, yield and productivity of #beta#-carotene as the objective functions. A simplified kinetic model was proposed to reproduce the observed time courses. The model asumes an inhibited cell growth of the Monod type and a nonlinear dependence of #beta#-cartene production on growth. The kinetic parameters in the model were determined and correlated with the operating variables.
