In order to eliminate the need for precise polishing of the end-face of fibers used in an optical connector, we have designed and developed a new concept of multi-fiber physical contact (PC) optical connector, which we call "C-PC connector" (a non-fixed fiber-portion compressed type mult-fiber PC optical connector). As a result of calculation and various experiments, we have found the optimum conditions that allow the elimination of such end-face polishing in a C-PC connector for 12-fiber ribbon which we have developed. The C-PC connector for multi-mode 12-fiber ribbon in which such optimum conditions are applied has the fiber end-face length variances of less than 2um in average, and a return loss of more than 25dB without index matching materials, realizing an average insertion loss of less than 0.3dB.
