Quantitative Estimations of Bar Dynamics from Video Images

This paper addresses a new monitoring technique, based on hourly video observations of the nearshore zone. The work fcusses on the quantitative interpreation ofboserved patterns of wave breaking in order to estimate the bathymetry of sand bars. To that end, methods to iedntify the waterline from video images are needed. Moreover, the latter can be applied to directly monitor intertidal beach morphodynamics. Typical estimation errors were of order 20 to 50 cm for bar bathymetry and 10 cm for the shoreline.
