Real-time measurement techniques such as the dispersive Fourier transform (DFT) (in the spectral domain) and the time lens (in the time domain) have revolutionized the characterisation of ultrafast transient events such as rogue waves, modulation instability and mode-locking dynamics [1-3]. Although many impressive results have been obtained using these results separately, it is clear that the ideal setup for experimentalists would be to combine the two techniques to reveal spectral and temporal dynamics simultaneously. In this paper, we report the first simultaneous use of DFT and time lens measurements in the characterization of turn-on and Q-switched modelocking dynamics in a saturable absorber modelocked fibre laser.
