In view of the desire to increase waterway safety and efficiency, this paper presents thernway in which the various components of vessel under-keel clearance (UKC) can be precisely determined.rnBased on a major field data collection program in the St. Lawrence Seaway, the paper discusses waterrnlevels, channel bathymetry and shoal identification, the precise measurement of vessel elevation usingrnGlobal Positioning System On-The-Fly (GPS-OTF), and vessel dynamics in a confined waterway (pitch,rnroll and squat). It also suggests possibilities to optimise precision in the context of 3D real-time GPSrnmarine transportation and offers suggestions for a traffic management system to provide a safe andrnoptimal UKC.
