Price of Piracy: The Hidden Threats within Illicit Streaming Services

The paper will detail how consumers are facingthe adverse effects of using Illicit streaming devices (ISDs)or services and as a result becoming a target and victim ofmalicious activity. Many consumers are turning to suchdevices and services today to consume pirated contentwithout considering the additional threats they face throughthreat actors utilizing this attack surface to commitcybercrime. This paper will provide an understanding ofwhat an ‘illicit streaming device or service is; how they areobtained, and what actually makes a streaming device orservice ‘illicit’ per se. The paper will then progress to workthrough why ISDs are a target, the threats to consumers, thevulnerabilities that exist and conclude with the differentthreat scenarios that exist today for the consumers of suchdevices and services.
