The construction of rechargeable Ni-Zn cells follows the RAM-cell design: the pelletised MnO_2-cathode mix of RAM-cells is replaced by a porous nickel oxide structure. The anode is made of a gelled KOH-Zn-powder or of a ZnO mixture. Two overlapping layers of "Berec" (laminate of regenerated high purity cellulose film bonded to a non-woven polyamide synthetic fiber) build a reliable separator system. Compared to a rolled cathode structure the design of a AA- or C-size cell with a single or dual porous nickel oxide layer (1.5-2 mm) is very volume efficient and allows a zinc surplus of 2-3. These cylindrical Ni-Zn cells deliver a capacity of 0.5 to 1.5 Ah, depending on load, DOD and cut-off voltages.
